OCTOBER 29, 2015: MORE overtaking lanes are on the way for motorists travelling on the Bruce Highway south of Townsville.
Works will start next month on the $9.84 million overtaking lanes project at Alligator Creek.
This follows confirmation that FK Gardner and Sons have been awarded the contract for the project.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss confirmed today that FK Gardner and Sons have been awarded the contract for the project which will improve safety by creating more overtaking options.
8,000 vehicles travel this road every day and upgrades like these not only increase capacity, but also reduce the number of risky manoeuvres drivers sometimes make when passing slower vehicles, particularly large trucks.
Providing safer overtaking opportunities is really critical for improving safety for motorists.
This project will deliver a new set of northbound and southbound overtaking lanes on the 2.3 kilometre section between Alligator Creek Road and Allendale Drive.
An average of 29 jobs will also be supported over the life of the project, providing valuable employment opportunities for locals at a time when they are needed most.
The project is due for completion in 2016.
